Online databases are an increasingly important aspect of biomedical research,
and we are developing ways in which BioMed Central can contribute to their development.
Firstly, we are committed to helping authors make all data associated with BioMed
Central journal articles freely available online. Secondly, we are developing several
new databases that draw together published information on particular topics.
Our Catalog of Databases on the Web
We are maintaining a catalog of the numerous databases that are available online.
So far, we have more than 1100 sites listed covering a wide range of biomedical topics
from Alzheimer disease to zebrafish anatomy. Some of the databases contain experimental
data; others provide synopses of published information. Most of the databases are
freely accessible and should be of interest to researchers, teachers and students. Use
the links in the menu on the left to read more about the catalog and to start exploring it.
A new Biology Image Library
We are creating a new library of images, movies, animations and illustrations that
are useful for research and education. For more information and to see some sample
material, visit the library's website
The creation of new online databases
We are keen to form collaborations with researchers to create and publish databases
that serve the needs of research communities. We can provide:
- a safe, permanent home for databases
- editorial and technical support in creating and maintaining a database
- help with the development and expansion of an existing database's content
- subscription-based access, marketing, and other commercialisation services
We welcome hearing from anyone who would like to create a database or who already
has a database that could benefit from a new home. Please
contact us if you have an idea to discuss.
