Selecting items
Select one or more items in the list to limit the search to those items. If no item is selected, the search will not be limited by content type.
To select multiple items, hold down the control key (Windows) or the Apple key (Mac OS) when clicking on an item.
We have classified the content of databases in two ways:
(i) according to the items on which they contain information
(ii) the type of information available
(i) Content items
Biomolecule: the properties and functions of biological molecules that do not fall into the categories of DNA, RNA, Protein or Enzyme
cDNA: cDNA sequences and libraries
Cell: the structures, functions and properties of cells
Disease: disease phenotypes and epidemiology, the genetic basis of disease and animal models of human disease
DNA: the structure, properties and functions of DNA. Includes DNA sequences and sequence features. See also "Gene" and "Gene family"
DNA/Organism stock: stock centers for DNA clones, cells and whole organisms
Drug/Chemical: information about small, biologically active molecules. See also "Biomolecule"
Enzyme: as for "Protein" and "RNA", but with a focus on catalytic molecules
EST/STS: sequences and libraries for Expressed Sequence Tags and Sequence Tagged Sites
Gene: sequences, properties and biological functions of genes and gene products. See also "RNA", "Protein"
Gene family: as for "Gene" but with an emphasis on one or more gene families. See also "Protein family"
Journal article: article repositories and large bibliographic databases
Ontology: source databases for the development and management of controlled vocabularies and ontologies
Organism: information about the properties and features of whole organisms
Protein: structure, sequences, properties and functions of proteins. See also "Protein family"
Protein family: as for "Protein" but with an emphasis on one or more protein families. See also "Gene family"
RNA: structures, sequences, properties and functions of RNA
SNP: Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, also other simple genetic variants
(ii) Information types
Computationally generated: the content is generated at least in part by algorithms. See also "Curated"
Curated: the content is managed by human intervention. See also "Computationally generated"
Experimental Data: databases holding experimental data, as opposed to sites linking to data held elsewhere
Expression: data concerning the localization and levels of gene expression in cells, tissues and whole organisms
Images: visual material of research or educational value
Interaction: the physical or genetic interactions between molecules
Links to other sources: sites with a large number of well-organized links to other websites
Nomenclature: the nomenclature of processes, molecules and organisms. See also "Ontology"
Phylogeny: the evolutionary relationships and classifications of molecules and organisms
Sequence: amino acid and nucleotide sequence data
Structure: the chemical and three-dimensional structures of biological and biologically active molecules
Synopses: databases with editorially created synopses of data
